This trip and blog post is part of a collaboration with Visit Austria.

When I first planned my road trip to the stunning region of Schladming-Dachstein from Copenhagen, I have to admit I was a bit nervous about driving such a beautiful yet remote area with an electric car. Would I run out of battery before reaching those majestic mountains? Would I need to spend hours charging in the middle of nowhere? Turns out, my fears were unfounded — and in fact, my electric car became the perfect companion for this journey of slow travel and deep connection with nature.

This trip was all about embracing the slow pace, indulging in wellness, and immersing myself fully in the tranquil beauty of Austria’s mountain landscape. No rushing, no stress — just a harmonious blend of stunning scenery, wellness, and culinary delights. Join me as I share the highlights of this unforgettable adventure, where peaceful mountains, cozy villages, and mindful travel come together in perfect harmony.

Exploring the Majestic Beauty of Schladming-Dachstein: An Austrian Mountain Adventure

After a memorable start to my journey from Copenhagen—ferrying across the Baltic Sea from Gedser to Rostock and then hitting the open road—I found myself surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Austria’s Schladming-Dachstein region. With its towering peaks, lush valleys, and charming villages, it truly feels like a hidden paradise. This is a place that invites slow exploration, breathtaking views, and plenty of quiet moments.
During the trip, I made a total of six quick-charge stops—luckily, there was lots of available charging, and I only stayed around 10-20 minutes at each stop. These pauses weren’t just for charging; I also took the chance to rest, visit the toilet, and grab some refreshments. Honestly, I might not have needed quite so many stops, but it was nice to have time to relax and take in the scenery.

Hotel Höflehner ****Superior

I stayed at Höflehner for a whole week, and it was the only place I slept during my trip. It truly felt like my home away from home, and I thoroughly enjoyed the peace and comfort the hotel offers. With full pension included, it was a real treat to start each day with a wonderful buffet full of local delicacies. The staff warmly welcomed me, and the chefs prepared fresh omelets right in front of me, while I helped myself to the juice station, where I could make my own delicious, fresh juices.

Not only is Höflehner perfect for relaxation, but it’s also a fantastic family hotel. While I wasn’t there with kids myself, I observed that the hotel caters very well to families. There are plenty of kid-friendly options for food, making it easy to keep the little ones happy. The hotel also features a lovely indoor swimming pool just for kids and babies, perfect for fun and relaxation regardless of the weather. Just outside, there are easy hiking trails through beautiful nature—great for family walks and exploring the stunning alpine landscape.

Lunches were light and satisfying, featuring soups, salads, and small bites—great for a quick break during the day. In the evening, a fantastic six-course menu awaited, with a mix of dishes from the buffet and your choice of à la carte options. As a vegetarian and someone who loves good food, I especially appreciated the variety, including delicious local cheeses and tempting desserts. Every meal was a highlight, served in the peaceful and scenic surroundings.

Spending a whole week here allowed me to fully unwind, enjoy nature, and recharge — it was without a doubt the perfect place to relax and find a deep sense of peace. From my observations, I can see that this would be a wonderful spot for families too, offering both comfort and outdoor activities that would delight children and adults alike.

Steirischer Bodensee Wasserfall & Bodensee (Steiermark) & Gasthof Forellenhof

The next morning, I was eager to explore some of the region’s stunning natural sights. My first stop was the Steirischer Bodensee Wasserfall—a waterfall so lively and powerful that I found myself mesmerized, watching the cascading water catch the sunlight and sparkle. Walking along the gentle trails around the falls, I could feel the invigorating energy of nature’s raw power all around.

A little further along, I came across the serene Bodensee in Steiermark—a picturesque lake cradled against lush green foothills, its surface perfectly mirroring the cloud-dotted sky. I paused at Gasthof Forellenhof, a cozy mountain inn renowned for its fresh trout. Sitting on the terrace, I enjoyed a simple yet delicious grilled fish, relishing the pure, clean flavors that somehow seem to taste even better when surrounded by water and forest. It’s incredible how food feels different in the middle of nature—every bite infused with the peace and quiet that only the mountains can offer.

Friedenskircherl at Stoderzinken

The next day, I was eager to explore more of the region’s natural treasures. Honestly, I didn’t expect to find snow in Austria at the end of May, but as I started driving up the mountain, it became clear that the mountains still hold their winter magic. There is a 20€ toll for the car but it was absolutely necessary, as the route to the top of the Stoderzinken area is quite long—around 10 kilometers uphill through winding mountain roads. The entrance is near the small village of Gröbming, where you can park close to Stoderhütte and hike the final stretch to Friedenskircherl.

The hike takes about 20-30 minutes through truly breathtaking scenery, with sweeping views that leave you speechless. As I got higher, I watched snowflakes gently fall around me, blanketing the landscape in white. It was an unexpected sight for late spring, and it made the experience even more unique. The tiny chapel, Friedenskircherl, sits in this quiet, majestic space at the very edge of the cliffs, surrounded by nothing but the incredible panoramic views. There’s nothing around besides the chapel itself and the stunning scenery, so I recommend bringing a coffee in a thermos to enjoy while soaking in the tranquility from this breathtaking vantage point. It’s a moment I’ll never forget—feeling small amidst such untouched natural beauty, with snow falling softly as I took it all in.

Restaurant Grafenwirt in Aich

After the stunning hike and soaking in the peaceful mountain scenery, I was in need of a good, hearty meal. I found my way to Restaurant Grafenwirt in Aich, a charming family-owned place known for serving authentic Austrian cuisine. Do note that they offer the same delicious food for lunch and dinner, but it’s a good idea to check their opening hours in advance.

That evening, I treated myself to a comforting, satisfying meal. The restaurant exudes genuine Austrian warmth, creating a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re dining with friends. I ordered a classic Wiener Schnitzel, perfectly crispy and golden, accompanied by a fresh side salad. It was exactly what I needed after a day filled with mountain adventures. The friendly staff shared lovely stories about the region, and their warm hospitality made the entire experience even more special.

Pürgg-Trautenfels

The next day, I set out to explore the charming village of Pürgg, a tiny corner of Austria full of character and history. With its picturesque stone houses and narrow, winding streets, Pürgg radiates a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. One of the highlights was visiting the small chapel at the top of the village—perched on a hill offering breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape. The walk up was rewarding, and from there, I was treated to sweeping vistas of lush forests and rolling hills that seem to stretch endlessly into the distance.

Pürgg’s authentic charm and serene beauty are truly captivating. I found myself lingering longer than I had initially planned, just absorbing the tranquility and the magic of this quiet, hidden spot. It’s one of those places where nature, history, and a sense of stillness come together perfectly—an authentic retreat into Austria’s unspoiled countryside.

Gasthaus Krenn in Pürgg

In the same beautiful village of Pürgg, I decided to take a break and enjoy a leisurely lunch at Gasthaus Krenn. This small alpine inn is renowned for its warm hospitality and hearty, authentic fare. Walking inside, I was greeted by a charming interior filled with rustic wood beams, antique décor, and a crackling fire that immediately made me feel at home. The cozy atmosphere perfectly reflects the rustic beauty of the surrounding landscape.

For my meal, I chose a delicious dish featuring locally foraged mushrooms, complemented by a fresh, regional salad. The flavors were simple yet rich, highlighting the best of seasonal ingredients. To finish, I enjoyed a homemade apple strudel—the classic Austrian dessert—which was warm, fragrant, and beautifully balanced with a crispy crust and sweet filling. These honest, comforting dishes truly taste of the land and its heritage, each bite infused with tradition and local flavors. Sitting there, surrounded by the warm ambiance and the peaceful mountain scenery outside, I felt an even deeper appreciation for the authentic hospitality that makes Austria’s mountain villages so special. It was the perfect pause in a day full of beautiful discoveries.

Wörschachklamm

After a hearty meal and some time to soak in the peaceful village atmosphere, I headed to Wörschachklamm. Interestingly, I accidentally inputted the GPS to a different parking lot—so I ended up at the Parkplatz Wörschachklamm, but it was a bit further away from the main entrance. I had to walk a little longer than expected, but honestly, it was worth every step. The walk through the scenic landscape was peaceful and allowed me to soak in even more of Austria’s natural beauty before reaching the gorge.

Once I finally arrived at the wooden walkways that snake along the canyon walls, I was immediately immersed in nature’s raw power. The roaring sound of waterfalls cascading into crystal-clear pools, the earthy scent of moss and damp wood—everything about this place commands respect and awe. Walking through the narrow passages, I felt humbled by the sheer force of water that had sculpted this landscape over centuries. The sunlight filtering through the trees created playful dancing patterns on the rocks, and I found myself fully present in this wild, untouched corner of Austria.

It’s a reminder of nature’s patience and resilience—a truly memorable spot I’ll never forget. So, be aware when planning your visit that the parking lot called Parkplatz Wörschachklamm might be a little ways from the entrance, but no matter the walk, it’s all part of the experience—and completely worth it.

Dachstein Glacier

The next morning, I set out with high hopes to visit the Dachstein Glacier, which is often regarded as one of the absolute highlights of the region. I had looked at countless pictures in advance—images of the expansive sea of ice and snow, jagged peaks piercing through the clouds, and the famous Skywalk platform hanging dramatically above the abyss. It looked like something out of another world, and I had dreamed of experiencing it firsthand.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on my side. Thick clouds and fog kept me from reaching above the clouds to see the glacier’s full grandeur. It was honestly quite disappointing, especially knowing how spectacular it must look from up there. But even without reaching the top, I couldn’t help but marvel at the photos I’d seen—those images truly capture the breathtaking beauty of the landscape.

This is the beauty of nature: we can’t always have it perfect, and it’s the unpredictable weather that makes each visit unique and impressive. Sometimes, fog, clouds, or rain remind us of the fragile, ever-changing world we’re lucky to witness. Even if I didn’t get the full view myself, I felt a deep appreciation for the raw, fragile beauty of these glacial landscapes—just looking at the pictures, I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary. Sometimes, the unpredictability of nature makes it even more memorable and powerful.

Dachsteinkaffee Rösterei

Instead of venturing up to the beautiful but cloud-covered glacier, I was looking for something warm and cozy to lift my spirits in the dark, cold weather. Luckily, I found the perfect place—Dachsteinkaffee Rösterei. This charming café is deeply rooted in a passion for quality coffee, and it immediately felt like a refuge from the chilly mountain air.

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely owner and the brewmaster, who took the time to show me how they roast their organic beans locally. Watching the meticulous process of roasting and then enjoying a cup of their rich, aromatic coffee made me feel so grateful for these unexpected moments. Sitting in the warm, inviting ambiance, sipping a perfectly brewed espresso while observing the barista craft each pour with care, was a simple joy—an ideal way to revive my senses after a day of battling the unpredictable mountain weather.

This little spot is truly a haven for coffee lovers—a perfect pause to savor the moment, reflect, and embrace the comforting power of a good cup of coffee even on the gloomiest, coldest days.

Regional Regal Pruggern

On my way back from the coffee roastery, I happened to stop at Regional Regal Pruggern entirely by chance. While it wasn’t one of the official highlights of the trip, I found it fascinating to experience a truly local spot that beautifully reflects the region’s authentic flavors. The restaurant showcases the best of regional Austrian cuisine, using fresh, seasonal ingredients and offering honest, hearty dishes.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and though it was a brief stop, I appreciated the genuine hospitality and the chance to connect with the local food scene. It was a nice reminder of the importance of supporting local producers and traditions, even if it wasn’t the most spectacular experience of the journey. Sometimes, those unexpected, authentic moments are what make trips memorable in their own quiet way.

Lodenwalker Est. 1434 — A Piece of Austrian Heritage

One of the most incredible stops I made was at Lodenwalker, a company that has been weaving its timeless fabrics since 1434. It’s almost hard to fathom how many generations of artisans have worked here, producing the same high-quality “Loden” wool fabrics for centuries. Just imagine the stories and skills passed down through the ages—each piece crafted with care and tradition that hasn’t changed much over hundreds of years.

Visiting their old-fashioned workshop was a fascinating peek into these enduring craftsmanship techniques. While it might not have been the most exciting part of the trip for everyone, for me, it added a real sense of Austrian heritage and history. And beyond that, they also sell beautiful traditional clothing made from their iconic fabric—a practical and stylish reminder of Austria’s rich textile traditions. It’s extraordinary to see and experience how history and craftsmanship continue to thrive through such a remarkable, centuries-old family business.

Schladming and Café Artisant

As I rolled into the lively town of Schladming, I felt the vibrant energy of the mountain town that’s equally famous for its world-class ski races and summer hiking trails. The atmosphere was welcoming, lively, and full of authentic Austrian charm.

I wanted a genuine, local experience before heading further into the mountains. I found myself at a charming family-driven café that felt more like stepping into someone’s living room. The mom and dad were busy in the kitchen, preparing something with care and love, while their child was lounging on a sofa, reading one of the many books from the shelves that lined the walls—transforming the space into a cozy little library as well.

The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of authentic Austrian charm. The rustic decor, combined with the comforting scent of fresh coffee beans and homemade treats, made this spot irresistible. I settled in with a rich latte, soaking up the peaceful, homely vibe and quietly observing the scene around me. These small, genuine moments—sharing space with locals in a place that feels like a warm embrace—are what truly make travel special.

My trip through Schladming-Dachstein was amazing, full of beautiful scenery, charming villages, and special moments. From hiking in stunning gorges to cozy cafes, this region shows Austria’s true beauty and traditions. Even the changing weather made it more memorable—sometimes the weather makes travel even more special.

I also truly believe Austria is a great place for families to visit. I can’t wait to come back with my own family when my son is a little older, so we can enjoy these wonderful places together and make more happy memories. For now, Schladming-Dachstein has really stayed with me, and I know there are many more amazing spots to explore in Austria in the future.
